University Hospital in Newark, N.J., named Carole Johnson as its next president and CEO, effective later in 2025.

Ms. Johnson previously led the federal Health Resources and Services Administration and served as commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, according to an Oct. 1 hospital news release.

During her time at the federal agency, Ms. Johnson led efforts to address maternal mortality and health equity, and spearheaded a restructuring of the national organ transplant network. As state commissioner, she helped expand Medicaid access to nearly 2 million people.

Ms. Johnson will succeed Kaitlan Baston, MD, who has served as interim CEO since May.

University Hospital is New Jersey’s only public academic medical center and the only state-designated level 1 trauma center for Northern New Jersey.
