University Hospital in Newark, N.J., has selected New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston, MD, as interim CEO, effective May 3.

Dr. Baston will temporarily step into the role held by Ed Jimenez, according to an April 22 hospital news release.

Mr. Jimenez, who has led the 519-bed academic medical center for the past two years, was recently named president and CEO of Radnor, Pa.-based Main Line Health, effective June 6.

Dr. Baston has served as New Jersey’s health commissioner since 2023. She will not seek the permanent role and will serve in the interim position while the hospital conducts its CEO search, the release said.

Before joining the health department, Dr. Baston was division head of addiction medicine and medical director of the Center for Healing at Camden, N.J.-based Cooper University Health Care, which she founded.
