Thomas Smyth, MD, has been appointed the inaugural executive vice president for community health at Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System, effective in late November.

Dr. Smyth, a longtime system leader, has served as president of Towson-based University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center since 2016 and previously was medical director of the UM St. Joseph Medical Group, according to an Oct. 22 news release.

In his new role, Dr. Smyth will oversee UMMS’ seven community member organizations and their affiliates, including clinics and other patient-facing facilities.

His appointment follows the promotion of Bert O’Malley, MD, president of University of Maryland Medical Center, to executive vice president for academic health.

Robin Luxon, RN, BSN, was named interim president of UM SJMC.
