Charles Sorenson, MD, president and CEO emeritus of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health and founding director of the Intermountain Health Leadership Institute, will retire at the end of 2025.

Dr. Sorenson’s retirement follows more than 50 years in medicine, including 18 years as a surgeon, he wrote in a Dec. 15 LinkedIn post. He served as the health system’s COO from 1998 to 2008 and as CEO from 2009 to 2016.

Since retiring as CEO in 2016, he has served as CEO emeritus. He has served as the leadership institute’s founding director for the past nine years.

Carter Dredge will assume the role of executive director of all three Intermountain institutes: leadership, healthcare delivery and mindshare, Dr. Sorenson wrote in the post. The leadership institute offers a capstone experience for high-potential leaders and is designed to build on existing leadership development programs.

“It’s been an extraordinary privilege to work alongside remarkable colleagues and friends, people who have consistently put the best interests [of] others first and worked tirelessly to help everyone live the healthiest lives possible,” Dr. Sorenson wrote.
