Mr. Whitmer worked at the 18-hospital system for 17 years. He assumed the CEO role in 2010.
The nearly $2 billion acquisition creates a 36-hospital system, spanning 10 states. The newly merged system has projected revenues of almost $8 billion in 2018. It also makes Steward the largest private hospital operator in the country.
In a written statement to employees, Mr. Whitmer said he is “leaving proud of what we together have accomplished and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for all of us,” according to The Tennessean.
