Los Angeles-based Keck Medicine of USC is making several leadership changes, including naming a new CEO and COO, effective Sept. 24.

Rodney Hanners will step down as CEO after six years leading the health system, according to a Sept. 10 news release from the University of Southern California.

Steven Shapiro, MD, USC’s senior vice president for health affairs, will assume direct operational responsibility for Keck Medicine as CEO. Dr. Shapiro joined USC in 2021 after serving as president of UPMC, where he oversaw 42 hospitals.

In addition to leading Keck Medicine, Dr. Shapiro will continue overseeing the Keck School of Medicine of USC. His title will change to executive vice president. Oversight of USC’s dentistry, gerontology, pharmacy and social work schools will shift to the university’s provost.

Two other Keck Medicine executives will take on expanded roles.

Marty Sargeant will become COO of Keck Medicine while continuing to serve as CEO of Keck Medical Center of USC. David Peng, MD, USC’s chief clinical officer, will also become deputy executive vice president for health affairs.

The changes extend to the Keck School of Medicine. Carolyn Meltzer, MD, will step down as dean after more than four years to become president of the Radiological Society of North America. She will remain a tenured faculty member at USC.

Vassilios Papadopoulos, PharmD, DPharm, will serve as interim dean of the medical school while continuing to lead the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

USC President Beong-Soo Kim said combining Dr. Shapiro’s operational responsibility for Keck Medicine with his oversight of the medical school is intended to help the organization move more quickly to expand its clinical care and research across the region.
