Dr. Byington joined University of California Health in October 2019. As executive vice president, she leads the country’s largest public academic healthcare system, which is made up of six health centers — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside Health, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco — that include 12 hospitals and 20 health science schools.
Dr. Byington’s departure takes effect June 30. The UC Health system plans to launch a national search for her successor in January, and Michael Drake, MD, president of the university, asked her to serve as special advisor to him after she steps down.
“Carrie has been an integral and effective part of our leadership team and is a trusted friend and colleague,” Dr. Drake wrote in his message about the leadership change. “Her transition will allow her to better balance work with family and personal commitments.”
Before joining UC Health, Dr. Byington held leadership roles at Texas A&M University System in College Station, Texas A&M College of Medicine in Bryan, and University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She is board-certified in general pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases.
