Gary S. Kaplan, MD. Chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System (Seattle). Dr. Kaplan has been chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System since 2000, where he also still practices internal medicine. An influential physician executive, he earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Medical Practice Executives and the American College of Physician Executives. Additionally, Dr. Kaplan chairs the Institute for Healthcare Improvement board of directors and is chairman of the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Lucian Leape Institute, among several other positions. Dr. Kaplan is noted for adapting the Toyota Production System in healthcare.
