WVU Medicine, CommonSpirit and Cincinnati Children’s are among the health systems that named new leaders to oversee quality and safety this year.
Here are eight chief quality officer appointments and transitions Becker’s has covered in 2025:
- In September, Morgantown, W. Va.-based WVU Medicine appointed Waleed Javaid, MD, as inaugural chief quality officer.
- Carolyn Harraway-Smith, MD, joined Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth as chief medical officer of its Daytona Beach hospital. Previously, she served as chief quality officer of Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health.
- Phillip Chang, MD, was named system vice president, chief medical and quality officer of Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health. He joined from Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System, where he spent three years as chief medical and quality officer.
- Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Health named Minka Schofield, MD, as chief quality and patient safety officer.
- Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, selected Maitreya Coffey, MD, to serve as inaugural chief quality officer.
- Nicholas Smyrnios, MD, was named associate vice president and chief quality officer of UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Memorial Medical Group in Worcester, Mass.
- Lewes, Del.-based Beebe Healthcare named Troy Schmit as vice president and chief quality officer. Dr. Schmit previously served as chief quality officer at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
- Eric Williams, MD, was promoted to chief quality officer at Cincinnati Children’s. He is also vice president of the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence.
