Bobby Arnold (West Tennessee Healthcare, Jackson, Tenn.). Mr. Arnold was named CEO of West Tennessee Healthcare in late January. He had served as interim CEO for the system since June 2009. Mr. Arnold previously served as CFO for the six-hospital health system.
Winston Borland (Medical Center of Arlington, Arlington, Texas). Mr. Borland was named the CEO of HCA’s Medical Center of Arlington in Dec. 2009. He previously served as COO at Medical Center of Plano (Texas) and before that as president and CEO of Northwest Regional Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Gregory Burfitt (Allegheny General Hospital & Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Pittsburgh). Mr. Burfitt was named CEO of Allegheny General Hospital and Western Pennsylvania Hospital, both in Pittsburgh, in January. The two hospitals, the flagships of the West Penn Allegheny Health System, are undergoing a corporate merger to become one organization. Mr. Burfitt previously served as a healthcare consultant at BDC Advisors in Miami, and, before that, he was CEO of Centura Health, the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in Colorado.
William Foley (Cook County Health and Hospitals System, Chicago). Mr. Foley was named CEO of Cook County Health and Hospitals System in March 2009. He previously served as interim CEO for Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, Calif., and as a managing partner at Wellspring Partners.
Amy Freeman (Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C.). Ms. Freeman was named CEO of Ascension Health’s 408-bed Providence Hospital in February. She comes to Providence from Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, where she spent 17 years, most recently as executive vice president and senior vice president of patient care services, according to a press release from the hospital.
Arthur Gonzalez (Hennepin Healthcare System, Minneapolis). Mr. Gonzalez was named CEO of Heneepin Healthcare System, which operates 446-bed Hennepin County Medical Center, in June 2009. He previously served as president and CEO of Tri-City Healthcare District, a public healthcare system in Oceanside, Calif.
Keith Granger (Trinity Medical Center, Birmingham, Ala.). Mr. Granger was announced as the new CEO of Community Health System’s Trinity Medical Center in February. He had served as the hospital’s interim CEO, and previously served as CEO of Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Ala., another CHS facility.
Patricia Hannon (New England Baptist Hospital, Boston). Ms. Hannon was named CEO of New England Baptist Hospital in Nov. 2009. She most recently served as senior vice president for healthcare operations at Baystate Health in Springfield, Mass. She has worked in healthcare for 25 years.
Laura Kaiser (Sacred Heart Health System, Pensacola, Fla.). Ms. Kaiser was named CEO of Sacred Heart Health System in February. She has served as the health system’s COO since 2008 and previously served as president of non-acute operations for Ascension Health in St. Louis, Mo.
James Levermann (St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital, Sugar Land, Texas). Mr. Levermann was announced as CEO of St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital in January. He will also serve as a vice president for Houston-based St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System. He most recently served as CFO at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital in Houston.
Roberta Luskin-Hawk, MD (Saint Joseph Hospital, Chicago). Dr. Luskin-Hawk was named CEO of Saint Joseph Hospital in Sept. 2009. She is one of only four female physicians to serve as a hospital CEO in Illinois. Dr. Luskin-Hawk founded Lakeshore Infectious Disease Associates in Chicago and has been on Saint Joseph’s medical staff since 1985.
Laurence Merlis (Abington Health, Abington, Pa.). Mr. Merlis was named CEO of Abington Health in Dec. 2009. In this position, he will also serve as CEO of 665-bed Abington Memorial Hospital. He previously served as CEO of GBMC HealthCare in Baltimore, which runs 360-bed Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
Mark Nantz (Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, Greenville, S.C.). Mr. Nantz was announced as the new CEO of Bon Secours St. Francis Health System in Dec. 2009. Mr. Nantz most recently served as president of Carolinas Medical Center – Northeast in Concord, N.C., an affiliate of Carolinas HealthCare System.
John Noseworthy, MD (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.). Dr. Noseworthy was announced as the new CEO for Mayo Clinic in May 2009. He succeeded Denis Cortese, MD, who retired in November. Dr. Noseworthy previously served as the medical director of the Mayo Clinic Department of Development, a consultant in the Department of Neurology and a professor of neurology in the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic.
Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, MD (University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, Mich.). Dr. Pescovitz was named executive vice president for medical affairs and CEO of the U-M Health System in May 2009. She is the first woman to hold the position, which was created in 1997 to coordinate and unify the university’s health-related activities. A pediatric endocrinologist and researcher, she previously served as executive associate dean for research affairs and interim vice president for research administration at Indiana University School of Medicine, and as president and CEO of Riley Hospital for Children in Bloomington, Ind.
Donald Rentfro (Natchez Community Hospital, Natchez, Miss.). Mr. Rentfro was named CEO of Health Management Associates’ Natchez Community Hospital in February. He recently served as CEO of River Medical Center in Jackson, Ky., and has 20 years of experience in business development and hospital operations in organizations across the Southeast.
Robert Rogalski (Excela Health, Greensburg, Pa.). Mr. Rogalski was named CEO of Excela Health, which includes three hospitals in Westmoreland County, Pa., in February. Mr. Rogalski, an attorney, previously served as senior counsel and healthcare practice group co-leader for Thorp Reed & Armstrong.
Kevin Sowers (Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C.). Mr. Sowers was appointed CEO of Duke University Hospital in June 2009. He had served as the hospital’s interim CEO and has been with Duke University Hospital for 24 years, serving in a number of positions, including COO.
Melody Trimble (Sparks Regional Medical Center, Fort Smith, Ark.). Ms. Trimble was named CEO of the Health Management Associates-managed Sparks Regional Medical Center in Dec. 2009. Ms. Trimble previously served as CEO of 312-bed Venice (Fla.) Regional Medical Center.
Kate Walsh (Boston Medical Center, Boston). Ms. Walsh was announced as the new CEO for Boston Medical Center in January. Ms. Walsh has been executive vice president and COO of Brigham and Women’s Hospital for the past five years. Prior to her position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Ms. Walsh was COO for Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research.
