Winona (Minn.) Health — based in a town with a population of 28,000 — implemented its EHR system in 2001. The community healthcare system is paperless and implements increased breast cancer screening, depression screening, care for diabetic patients and community engagement programs. The system includes a hospital, spinal and specialty clinics, an urgent care facility, emergency department, a skilled nursing home, assisted living and home care as well as hospice services. Its EHR is powered by Cerner.

HIMSS Stage 7 award is an advanced certification that means the hospital is paperless, sharing information with all entities within its health information exchange, and uses data mining to analyze trends and advance clinical decision making. For the final decision, an HIMSS evaluator visits the hospital or system eligible for the award.
