Researchers at the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University in Indianapolis developed an automated CDS system that was integrated into the electronic health record system at community health clinics associated with Indianapolis-based Wishard-Eskenazi Health. The system uses EHR data to create a personalized prescreening form completed by parents that alerts physicians to the need for further evaluation.
Following the 20-month study period, 70 percent of clinic physicians felt the automated system helped them adhere to recommended guidelines, and the researchers confirmed a moderate improvement in guideline adherence.
“Because physicians are busy juggling guidelines for preventive care and need to address concerns brought up by parents during the child’s visit — concerns which can supplant routine care — [the CDS system] helps them also address important screening and prevention,” said Stephen M. Downs, MD, MS, pediatrics professor and director of Children’s Health Services Research at the IU School of Medicine, in a news release.
