The white paper, “Crossing the Connectivity Chasm: Pinpointing Gaps in Readiness to Exchange Health Information” is based on a survey conducted by ECRI Institute, an independent non-profit organization that researches best practices for improving patient care, and its strategic partner s2a, a consulting firm focused on health information exchange and interoperability.
The survey addressed 10 issues pertaining to HIE, such as the exchange of information with non-employed providers’ electronic health records, the utilization of IT to manage and analyze population health information and access to remote clinical information. Some of the key findings include:
• Only 54 percent of respondents indicated that their organization has formally assessed their health information exchange and interoperability needs.
• Only 28 percent of respondents agreed that non-employed providers have remote access to their hospital’s enterprise clinical information systems.
• Sixty-five percent of respondents said their organization has begun to utilize IT systems to analyze and manage the population health information needed to be more accountable for patient care.
• Only 54 percent of respondents reported that their organization has formally assessed the degree of health information system interoperability across their community.
