Technology is changing the face of healthcare, however, it cannot perform at optimal level without a well-organized system of users. In his article, Custer focuses in on Six Sigma and Lean approaches that can help improve process evaluation.
While Lean and Six Sigma seem similar in thought and execution, Custer notes that there are differences that organizations should pay attention to before selecting one of these tools.
“For example, applying Six Sigma methodology to to an inefficient process will not streamline it; it will only make the process less prone to error,” Custer writes. “Likewise, process mapping will not fix an error-prone process; it will only make the process more efficient at producing errors.”
Each tool provides an opportunity for an organization to rethink how it approaches problems, methods and actions.
