Practices that employ advanced practice providers more likely to use EHRs: 3 things to know

Recent data shows a corollary between physician practices that employ advanced practice providers — nurse practitioners and physician assistants — and adoption of EHRs and certain EHR functionalities.

Here are three things to know from the study.

1. A study published in AJMC looked at the adoption and use of EHRs in physician practices. Researchers found practices with an NP or PA had higher EHR adoption rates (74 percent and 76 percent, respectively) than practices without an advanced practice provider (58 percent).

2. Additionally, the research indicates practices with employed APPs used EHRs with higher capabilities than just a basic EHR.

3. “Future research should examine how practices with APPs are using health IT to promote better health and coordinate care, as APPs become a more integral part of office-based care coordination teams to provide coordinated, patient-centered care,” the study concluces.
