Health systems have been making big investments in smart room technology to give patients and clinicians a safer, more connected and user-friendly experience.
Executives say the return on investment comes from enhanced staff and patient satisfaction, as well as from AI and cameras that can monitor for patient falls and deterioration and thus improve outcomes.
Here are four smart room projects recently covered by Becker’s:
1. UChicago Medicine signed an agreement with Artisight in April to launch its Smart Hospital Platform across patient rooms, operating rooms and post-anesthesia care units systemwide. The rollout involves more than 1,800 devices and will extend to a new 575,000-square-foot cancer facility opening in April 2027. The platform uses computer vision, voice recognition and real-time location services for virtual nursing, patient observation, workflow automation and infusion monitoring.
2. Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth is deploying smart rooms across its 57 hospitals in nine states throughout 2026 — the largest rollout on record. Features include digital whiteboards, digital door signs, and secure in-room video integrated with patient medical records for virtual visits with physicians, nurses, translators and family members.
3. Nashville, Tenn.-based Ardent Health is installing Hellocare.ai technology in over 2,000 patient rooms for AI-assisted virtual nursing, virtual physician visits, patient observation, fall prevention and detection, and pressure injury prevention across its 30 acute care hospitals.
4. Greenville, N.C.-based ECU Health launched Artisight’s platform at five rural hospitals in late 2025, with plans to expand systemwide. The effort is focused on telehealth access in the health system’s 29-county service area in eastern North Carolina.
