HITRUST introduces privacy controls in its security framework

Later this month, the Health Information Trust Alliance, developer of a certifiable security framework, will release new version of its Common Security Framework that includes the addition of privacy controls.

The new privacy controls will better align healthcare organizations' security and privacy programs and allow for an integrated approach to protect health information.

HITRUST established the Common Security Framework that provides organizations the structure and details relating to healthcare information security by integrating and aligning the requirements of existing privacy standards and regulations such as HIPAA and the HITECH Act.

"The new HITRUST CSF privacy domain facilitates an integrated approach to protect personal health information, aids in regulatory compliance, is consistent with healthcare industry trends and enhances the current HITRUST CSF," said Angela Holzworth, senior information risk analyst of Highmark Health and chair of HITRUST Privacy Working Group.
