5 must-have IT skills for 2015

The IT world is constantly changing with the development and adoption of new systems and services.

In anticipation of the new year, here are five skills IT professionals should refine to succeed in the upcoming year, presented by CIO.com and Foote Partners' chief analyst and research officer David Foote.

1. Cloud security. Nearly 90 percent of IT departments have adopted cloud computing, and investment in the cloud is expected to continue to grow. Couple this growth with a growing increase in data security, and cloud security becomes top of mind for IT departments.

2. Data architecture. The role of data architects is growing alongside organizational complexity. "This is not something you can ignore," said Mr. Foote in the report. "Everyone is thinking that no matter what we do today, we have to always be thinking down the road — three years, five years or more."

3. Data sciences. Mr. Foote said compensation for data sciences and data management skills is expected to rise in 2015, given the boom of big data initiatives.

4. Application programming. With more and more apps being released and downloaded everyday, companies will be looking for people with development skills, such as user interface and experience design.

5. Cybersecurity. Given the recent string of massive data breaches, companies are poised to give even more attention to security efforts, and Mr. Foote said it will remain on the list of necessary skills for years to come.

To identify these skills, Foote Partners analyzed compensation for tech workers on 384 noncertified IT skills.
