Nearly 8,000 patients of Andover, Mass.-based Covenant Health were affected by a May data breach.

The three-hospital system said it discovered unusual activity on its IT network May 26 and started working to restore its systems. An investigation determined that an unauthorized party had accessed Covenant Health’s IT environment on May 18 and accessed patient information.

The breached data may have included names and Social Security numbers. The health system reported to the Office of the Maine Attorney General that 7,864 individuals were affected.

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine, and St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine, were among the facilities disrupted by the IT outages, with St. Mary’s having to divert ambulances for a time.
