In a contributed piece to Med Device Online, Mr. Shah wrote that too often, security is approached as an element to be “bolted on” to a product late in its design cycle, but “cybersecurity is an emergent property of a system and not a feature or function that you can add later.”
This type of “checklist approach to security” is inadequate, Mr. Shah wrote, adding that integrating cybersecurity capabilities early on in the design cycle also can help medical device manufacturers separate themselves from the rest of the market competition. “Security and data privacy should be elevated to market driver and competitive differentiator status, because they can help you market your devices differently,” he wrote.
The benefits of early integration of cybersecurity capabilities are two-fold: Devices and the patient data they store will be better protected, and the product will become more attractive to consumers, Mr. Shah suggested.
