Bon Secours & biometrics: The new age of patient ID

Identifying patients is critical to care quality and patient safety, but all too often patient identification processes remain outdated. Incorrect patient identification can lead to patient safety errors, inhibit patient engagement and be financially harmful to hospitals.

The debate and discussion regarding unique patient identifiers is heating up, as the American Health Information Management Association introduced a petition to overturn the federal budget ban blocking HHS from developing unique patient identifiers. Additionally, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives launched the National Patient ID Challenge in early January, encouraging innovators to develop a patient matching solution.

While the need for a national patient identifier system remains in the works, Marriottsville, Md.-based Bon Secours Health System has implemented its own system that relies on biometrics to correctly identify patients.

Since implementing the system, Bon Secours Health System has reduced duplicate medical records, minimized patient identification errors and insurance fraud and improved patient satisfaction by demonstrating a commitment to patient safety and privacy.

Becky Carter, RN, MSN, administrative director of clinical informatics, physician support and health information management at Bon Secours St. Francis Health System in Greeneville, S.C., will share Bon Secours’ journey with biometric patient identification in a March 31 webinar hosted by Becker’s Hospital Review.
