AMA, HIMSS mHealth initiative unveils preliminary guidance on security, content

Xcertia, a collaborative initiative focused on the quality of mobile health apps, released a preliminary version of its mHealth guidelines Dec. 14.

The American Heart Association, American Medical Association, DHX Group and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society founded Xcertia in late 2016 to develop guidelines that help mHealth developers evaluate apps for quality, safety and effectiveness.

The preliminary guidelines focus on assessing four key areas of mHealth use: operability, privacy, security and content. The collaborative aims to update its guidelines each year.

"One year since Xcertia announced its formation, the collaboration is releasing initial mobile health apps guidelines as a starting point to build on," said Michael Hodgkins, MD, president, chairman and founding member of Xcertia's board of directors.

Xcertia will accept public feedback on the guidelines from clinicians, developers and payers, among other healthcare stakeholders, through the end of January.
