AI a tool for improvement, not replacement, Virtua Health CEO says

As hospitals and health systems continue to experiment with AI and generative AI, Dennis Pullin, president and CEO of Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua Health, told Becker’s that this technology will have the potential to improve — not replace — the interactions between providers and patients.

Mr. Pullin said Virtua Health, like other hospitals and health systems around the U.S., has already been exploring the capacity of AI. Specifically, Virtua Health has been looking at how AI can enhance the experience of both patients and providers.

For instance, Virtua Health uses an AI-based chatbot on its website that can help patients answer questions, and Virtua clinicians are using a computer-aided polyp detection system.

When it comes to the future of AI, Mr. Pullin said he envisions it as a tool to help “hospital staff relay information to patients about their condition and care plan in a manner that is dynamic and personalized.”

But Mr. Pullin said AI’s role in the healthcare industry won’t replace clinicians, just improve the work that they do.

“We must view AI as a tool to improve — not supplant — the meaningful connections we make,” he said.
