The survey polled 600 CIOs, tech and business directors, and other C-suite executives from firms with $1 billion or more in revenue. Six key takeaways:
- Thirty percent of firms have funneled $50 million or more into “smart automation projects,” which include robotic process automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognitive computing and analytics.
- More than 50 percent have spent $10 million or more on smart automation projects.
- Forty-three percent of smart automation deployments are led by IT teams alone.
- Less than 20 percent of smart automation deployments involve both IT and business teams.
- Just 17 percent say these projects are operating at full scale.
- Nearly one-third have not invested in smart technology yet.
Respondents said full-scale deployments have been held back due to a lack of resources; poor leadership or change management; and a lack of clarity around business objectives, cost and timelines. As a result, many projects are still in the pilot stage, or organizations have dialed back major efforts to apply tools in smaller doses to work that may be low-value or repetitive.
