Top 5 healthcare finance stories in December

Hospital closures and bankruptcies were among the healthcare finance topics that piqued the interest of readers in December.

1. Mayo Clinic Health System to close hospital in 2020
Mayo Clinic Health System will close its hospital and clinic in Springfield, Minn., and its clinic in Lamberton, Minn., on March 1, 2020.

2. Hospital chain files for bankruptcy
Americore Health and its four affiliated hospitals in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 30.

3. North Carolina hospital misses payroll
Employees of Washington Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, N.C., did not receive their paychecks Dec. 13. The hospital, which filed for bankruptcy in 2019, is catching up on payroll with a $500,000 loan from First Capital.

4. UPMC to close hospital in 2020
Pittsburgh-based UPMC will close its hospital in Sunbury, Pa., on March 31, 2020. The health system cited dwindling patient volume as one of the reasons it is closing UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury.

5. New York hospital closes campus
Eastern Niagara Health System has made several changes in recent months to improve its financial position and ensure long-term viability. In August, ENHS announced plans to close its campus in Newfane, N.Y. The Newfane campus closed Nov. 29, according to a Worker Adjustment Retraining Act Notification notice.
