U of Texas Health San Antonio breaks ground on $70M medical center facility

University of Texas Health San Antonio broke ground Oct. 12 on a $70 million building to house a new institute for longevity and aging, according to the San Antonio Express News.

The new three-story, 107,768-square-foot facility will replace the 16-year-old Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies. It will move to a new location on campus to facilitate collaboration between the institute and UT Health's School of Medicine.

"Bringing [the institute] to the medical center puts us front and center with the patients, and allows us to interact with the community much more directly," said Ronald Rodriguez, MD, PhD,  interim dean of UT Health's School of Medicine.

In addition, 10 faculty members will be hired for the new building.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2019.
