Plans to clean out New Orleans hospital following Katrina expected to cost $10M

It's been more than 11 years since city floods from levee failures during Hurricane Katrina left CharityHospital in New Orleans abandoned. Now, FEMA has approved the funds to clean out the hospital in a project estimated to take six months and cost $10 million, according to The Times-Picayune.

After the hospital's shutdown, only medical records were taken from the building. Photos posted online by people who explored the abandoned building showed that most of the medical equipment and furniture remained where it was left, according to the report.

All items being removed from the hospital will be either scrapped for salvage or thrown away altogether, according to the report, because of concerns the items might be contaminated by asbestos.

The clean-up project is not tied to plans to redevelop the hospital property, which were put on hold earlier this year after state officials said they didn't have enough information on the property's value or options for its redevelopment, according to the report.
