Geisinger to open $15M maternity center in Scranton

Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger's Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa., is getting a $15 million maternity center.

The center, which will be part of Geisinger's Women and Children's Institute, will mark the first time GCMC has offered maternity care since 2007, according to hospital officials.

"We listened to the Lackawanna County community who told us from day one they want to choose Geisinger for their maternal care," said Anthony Aquilina, DO, regional president of Geisinger Northeast. "Geisinger is excited to provide the same excellent, innovative obstetric care in Scranton that we've been providing across the health system for more than 100 years."

Hospital officials said in a news release the center will initially feature seven delivery rooms and 11 postpartum suites in a refurbished and renovated area on GCMC's third floor. They expect the center to open in 2019.

Meanwhile, Geisinger is seeking obstetricians, midwives, nurses and support staff for the center. Hospital officials said GCMC's midwifery program will be new for Scranton, where such a program has never been offered by a hospital system.
