Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health plans to build a 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Richmond, Texas, its second announced small-format hospital and second in the greater Houston area.

The Richmond hospital will operate as a satellite of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sugar Land (Texas), according to an Oct. 26 news release. It is expected to open in 2028.

The hospital will treat patients recovering from stroke and other neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions, according to the release. An interdisciplinary team of nurses, therapists and physicians will provide 24-hour nursing care, along with physical, occupational and speech therapy.

Small-format hospitals use the clinical expertise and resources of an established Encompass Health hospital while extending care into nearby communities, according to the release. In September, Encompass announced a small-format hospital in Conroe, Texas, which also serves the Houston market. The Conroe hospital is expected to open in late 2027.

Encompass Health Group President Craig Funk said continued growth across the greater Houston area is the driver behind the expansion.

“With two small-format hospitals now announced in the market, we’re creating new opportunities to serve communities closer to home while leveraging the clinical expertise and resources of our established hospitals,” he said in the release.
