Tech layoffs accelerated faster in 2022 than during COVID-19 shutdown

In 2022, the tech industry cut 150,000 jobs, compared to the 80,000 tech workers laid off during the COVID-19 shutdown in March to December of 2020, The Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 3.

Healthcare tech companies were hit particularly hard, as nearly 100 medtech companies laid off a total of 11,118 workers. The Journal compiled the figures from layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks layoffs from media reports and company releases.

In 2021, just 15,000 tech workers were laid off. Mass layoffs at high-profile tech companies like Meta and Twitter bolstered the higher 2022 layoff figures.

CIOs are taking advantage of the sudden influx of IT talent into the labor market, as 79 percent of laid-off tech workers found new employment within three months.
