Steve Lamb, vice president and partner of Memphis, Tenn.-based Implant Partners, outlined three healthcare business trends to watch in 2014 on the Implant Partners blog.
1. Continually developing and expanding reimbursement models. Mr. Lamb wrote shared savings is an area that will see a lot of growth, especially as physicians are incentivized to lower costs while still maintaining quality. Additionally, he said new bundled payment programs will be focused on individual physicians instead of institutions.
2. No two-midnight rule. The two-midnight rule has been strongly opposed since it was introduced, and Mr. Lamb said it may be completely eliminated if providers continually delay and eventually find a way to block it.
3. Development of designated surgical teams. When physicians know the procedure, know their role in the procedure and have communication processes in place, they tend to experience greater patient outcomes, Mr. Lamb said, referring to a study published in Health Care Management Review. In addition to proving patient outcomes, such teams drive value and streamline operations, Mr. Lamb wrote.
