Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua Health has begun construction on a $500 million expansion and renovation project at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, N.J.
The project includes a nearly 200,000-square-foot patient care pavilion which will increase the hospital’s size by 35%, according to a May 28 health system news release.
The new building will include 78 private patient rooms, 10 operating rooms, 40 surgical prep and recovery rooms, four cardiac catheterization labs and three electrophysiology labs. It will support specialties including organ transplantation, cardiovascular care, and a neuroscience program in collaboration with Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine.
The pavilion is named for philanthropist and Virtua board member Marvin Samson, whose foundation donated $5 million to support the health system’s education and workforce development programs. It marks the largest gift in Virtua’s history, the release said.
The pavilion is slated to open at the end of 2027.
As part of the multiyear investment, the hospital opened a new neuroscience intensive care unit on July 29, featuring 18 single-occupancy rooms, according to a July 21 news release.
Virtua acquired Lourdes Health System in 2019, renaming the hospital and expanding its network to five hospitals.
