Tenn. budget includes $12M for St. Jude’s hospital expansion

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis will benefit from $12 million in state aid as part of Tennessee’s $34.8 billion state budget, according to The Commercial Appeal. The $12 million will support the hospital’s expansion plan.

The budget plan was approved by state legislators Thursday and will be sent to Gov. Bill Haslam (R) to sign into law.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and St. Jude’s fundraising branch, ALSAC, have been talking to Gov. Haslam for months to figure out how the state can support the hospital’s $1 billion expansion plans. Gov. Haslam said the state will be involved in the project, but could not determine to what extent until St. Jude’s finalize its plans and requests for state support.

According to The Commercial Appeal, it could not be determined whether the $12 million is the full amount of state assistance for St. Jude’s or just part of it. Gov. Haslam has said state financial support will likely support infrastructure improvements surrounding the St. Jude’s campus, and the aid might be distributed over a multi-year period.
