Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital plans $49M modernization

Sentara Virginia Beach (Va.) General Hospital will begin a $49 million project to modernize patient care areas and infrastructure in February.

Here are 7 things to know about the project.

1. The 276-bed hospital will consolidate three intensive care units into one 24-bed ICU.

2. Sentara Virginia Beach will replace six operating rooms used since 1983 with a surgery wing and renovate four other operating rooms. Two new elevators will connect the operating rooms with the consolidated ICU, located a floor above the surgery area.

3. The hospital purchased a $2.7 million daVinci surgery robot to improve gynecology, urology and colorectal surgery.

4. Areas for sterile support will be expanded and upgraded. The hospital’s post anesthesia care unit will also be expanded and renovated to enhance patient flow.

5. Sentara Virginia Beach will replace its emergency generators and modernize its central utilities plant.

6. Physicians’ locker rooms and lounge areas will be modernized. 

7. Construction is expected to last about two and a half years.
