Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health is establishing a new medical center in Rapid City, S.D. with the help of a $300 million gift from philanthropist Denny Sanford.
Construction on the proposed 480,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to begin in 2027 and is expected to be completed by 2030, according to a Nov. 17 news release.
The Sanford Black Hills Medical Center campus will include:
- 168 inpatient beds
- Future campus expansion for an additional 168 beds
- Emergency department bays
- Surgical suites and procedure rooms
- Cath labs
- Full inpatient and outpatient imaging suites
- Dialysis center
- Oncology infusion center
- Children’s outpatient and inpatient services
Mr. Sanford, the founder of First Premier Bank, donated $400 million to South Dakota Sioux Valley Hospitals & Health System in 2007, which then renamed itself Sanford Health. He has donated nearly $2 billion to the health system since 2004, according to the release. His first gift established Sanford Children’s Hospital.
Beginning in 2026, Sanford Health will invest $10 million over a decade to partner with K-12 schools, technical colleges and universities across the Black Hills region:
- $4.5 million to expand sponsorships at regional post-secondary educational institutions.
- $3 million to invest in Build Dakota to support in-demand technical education.
- $2.5 million to expand the Aspire program to foster students’ interest in health care and provide hands-on learning opportunities for more than 13,000 K-12 students
