Hawaii State Hospital releases details on $140M psychiatric facility

In the wake of several recent escapes from its inpatient psychiatric facility, Kaneohe-based Hawaii State Hospital plans to build a $140 million facility with better security, according to KHON2 TV

The new facility will have 144 beds, 16-foot high security walls and enclosed courtyards. It will be built on the upper campus of the state hospital, replacing a building demolished in 2016.

The building will be designed to be therapeutic and ease overcrowding, hosptial officials said.

Construction is scheduled to begin in August; completion is slated for 2021.
