Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System opened its Freeman Fort Scott (Kan.) Hospital on Sept. 4.

The 10-bed acute care hospital also comprises a six-bed emergency department. Freeman Health shared initial plans for the hospital in June 2024, according to a Sept. 4 news release from the health system.

Freeman Fort Scott is located at Fort Scott’s former hospital site which shuttered in 2018.

In January, Freeman Health shared that plans for Freeman Fort Scott were under review by state officials and that it was seeking licensure to open and operate the hospital. On Sept. 3, Freeman leaders were notified that the hospital had passed the Kansas licensure survey.

“Passing this survey affirms Freeman’s readiness to provide exceptional healthcare services in Fort Scott — and reflects the strength of the organization’s culture and commitment to excellence,” the release said. “Now, attention turns to passing a credentialing survey conducted by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services officials.”
