Patients could previously receive treatment for minor illnesses and injuries at the company’s 10 locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn.
Unlike many other retail clinics, which accommodate more than 10.5 million visits in the U.S. per year, Duane Reade clinics have physicians, according to the report. Most are staffed with nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
New York Department of Health Press Secretary Christopher Miller said the clinic closures are not expected to have a “substantial” effect because “while some people use retail clinics in NYC, the vast majority of primary care visits occur in non-retail clinic settings,” according to the report.
Duane Reade recently sent a letter to former patients informing them of the impending closures so they could “make a seamless transition to another healthcare provider,” such as CVS, City MD and Medrite Urgent Care, according to the report.
