AdventHealth Riverview (Fla.) is nearly doubling its hospital capacity with a $50 million expansion just one year after the $263 million facility opened in late October 2024.
“As early as summer 2025, we were dealing with pressure points that we anticipated three to four years out from a forecast,” Jason Newmyer, CEO of AdventHealth Riverview, said during a Becker’s Healthcare Podcast episode. “Now we are in progress to build two new units, 68 beds in a [medical and surgical unit] and [progressive care unit] capacity.”
The hospital’s two units will be providing patient care by December 2026.
Mr. Newmyer, who has been with AdventHealth for 21 years, said rapid population growth in Hillsborough County, Fla., was a driving factor for the expansion. AdventHealth Riverview’s service area is home to around 500,000 people within a 30-minute drive radius, and is expected to grow by 7% or more annually over the next decade.
The investment will bring AdventHealth Riverview, a 272,000-square-foot hospital, from an 82-bed facility to 150 beds. It will also bring significant economic benefits to the area through job growth.
“We anticipate having around 1,200 jobs here, so another 400 jobs that we expect to bring into this campus with this next phase,” Mr. Newmyer said. “Even as we do this advanced work to build out shelved space and make things happen … we still have space set aside that we can quickly grow into.”
Mr. Newmyer also said the use of data analytics and AI has helped anticipate community healthcare needs, from surgical demand to specialty services like urology, oncology and gastroenterology, ensuring the hospital meets growing market demands and can treat patients effectively.
“We are going to care for [patients] and honor their traditions, their norms and love them through whatever process is in front of them,” he said.
