Saint Luke's Health System, UnitedHealthcare launch ACO

Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke's Health System and UnitedHealthcare in Minnetonka, Minn., collaborated for an accountable care program to cut healthcare costs while enhancing patients' experiences.

The program looks to reduce unnecessary testing and emergency visits for individuals enrolled in UnitedHealthcare's employer-based health plans. Under the ACO, Saint Luke's and UnitedHealthcare will share health information such as notification of emergency department visits and hospital admissions. The organizations will also allocate more resources toward coordinating care and may use patient navigators to support community-based coordination.

"Partnering with UnitedHealthcare will give Saint Luke's physicians and care providers access to information relevant to an individual's care and offer a better understanding of each patient's specific healthcare needs," said Robert Bonney, senior vice president of non-acute services and business development for Saint Luke's.
