VA signed off on 39% of IT contracts without consulting CIO, report says

A report from the Government Accountability Office found that the Department of Veterans Affairs signed off on 39 percent of IT contracts between March 2018 and September 2021 without approval from the CIO, FCW reported March 31.

The contracts totaled $661.4 million in obligations. In March 2018, the VA switched to a new tracking system to expand IT acquisition access.

“Full visibility into the procurement of VA’s IT assets and activities will help to ensure that the CIO is able to provide input on current and planned IT acquisitions,” the report said. “Without this visibility, VA may award IT contracts that are duplicative or poorly conceived.”
