The shooting occurred Tuesday evening after Webster, Fla., resident William Adams turned in front of another vehicle and was injured, according to a statement from Florida highway patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskin. A medic crew treated Mr. Adams on the scene before taking him to nearby Brooksville (Fla.) Regional Hospital.
A nurse discovered Mr. Adams in the emergency room suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Physicians were unable to resuscitate him.
No one else was injured in the shooting.
Investigators found a volume of hydrocodone and other pills in Mr. Adams’ care, according to Sgt. Gaskins. However, the traffic report indicated troopers did not suspect drug or alcohol use was a factor in the crash, according to Tampa Bay Times.
Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the tragedy.
