The American Academy of Physician Associates’ push to rebrand the profession continues to play out nationwide, with 41 constituent organizations adopting or moving to adopt the “physician associate” title in their formal name, documents, websites and other public-facing materials.
The groups are independent organizations affiliated with AAPA. While AAPA voted to adopt the physician associate title in 2021 and subsequently changed its legal name, each entity must determine whether to update its organization name, and state chapters must lobby for statutory changes to recognize the new title. Six states have written the new title into law: Oregon, Maine, New Hampshire, Iowa, Delaware and Alaska.
