In one year, AdventHealth Hendersonville (N.C.) cut 63% of total anesthesia gas emissions, including a 75% cut in nitrous oxide emissions.

Physician-led teams at AdventHealth Hendersonville and AdventHealth Polk worked together to eliminate routine use of desflurane, according to an Oct. 29 system news release. They also moved parts of their anesthesia delivery systems away from centralized nitrous oxide and trained clinicians on low-flow techniques.

“We’ve been able to show with evidence and research that these changes have not affected our anesthesia care or patient outcomes,”  Jacob Hansen, DO, department chair and medical director for the department of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at AdventHealth Hendersonville, said in the release. “At the same time, we’ve demonstrated a dramatic improvement in our sustainability goals and environmental footprint.”

Improvements began at both hospitals in 2025.
