HHS Awards $71M in Grants to Strengthen Nursing Workforce

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced the Department has awarded $71.3 million in grants to expand nursing education, training and diversity.

The funding for nursing workforce development was reauthorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and includes funding for workforce development for all levels of nurses, from entry-level to advance practice, according to an HHS news release.

Specifically, the grants included:

•    $23.4 million to assist registered nurses in completing graduate education to become nursing faculty;
•    $16.1 million for traineeships for advanced nursing training programs;
•    $10.9 million to strengthen nursing education and practice capacity;
•    $3.6 million to increase nursing education opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities underrepresented among registered nurses; and
•    $1.3 million for nurse anesthetist traineeships.
