A recent Staff Care survey showed 85 percent had used temporary physicians sometime in the last 12 months, compared with 72 percent in the previous year. The primary reason, cited by 63 percent, was to fill a position until a permanent physician could be found.

The most sought-after specialties were psychiatrists (accounting for 22 percent of requests for temporary physicians), primary care physicians (20 percent), internal medicine subspecialists (12 percent), anesthesia providers (11 percent), hospitalists (9 percent), surgeons (7 percent), radiologists (7 percent), emergency medicine (4 percent), dentists (4 percent) and oncologists (2 percent).
