Gen Z, millennials undercount mental health benefits: Survey

While 89% of employers reportedly offer mental health coverage, fewer than half of Generation Z and millennial workers say their workplaces provide it, according to a survey from The Cigna Group.

Cigna surveyed 5,000 adults Dec. 12-19, 2024, in collaboration with YouGov. Participants were U.S. residents aged 18 years or older who spoke English or Spanish.

Here are five things to know:

1. Anxiety is the third most common chronic condition among employed adults in the U.S., affecting 30% of the workforce.

2. Workers with anxiety are less likely to be satisfied with their jobs or feel supported in achieving work-life balance. About half of employees with anxiety reported being satisfied with their job, compared to 68% of those without anxiety.

3. Employees with anxiety were also less likely to say their manager understands their work style or makes them feel safe and included.

4. Although 8 in 10 workers with anxiety can identify accommodations that would improve their performance, fewer than 2 in 10 have requested them. Among workers with anxiety, Gen Z employees are the least likely to feel comfortable requesting accommodations.

5. The most desired accommodations include flexible work hours, the ability to work from home, uninterrupted work time, private workspaces and designated quiet areas.
