Irving, Texas-based Christus Health and Texas State University’s St. David’s School of Nursing in Round Rock have finalized their partnership to expand nursing education and strengthen the healthcare workforce in the state.

The agreement was finalized at a Nov. 19 signing ceremony, according to a Nov. 19 joint news release. The collaboration was launched in the fall semester and provides 25 nursing students with clinical experience at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital-San Marcos in Texas.

The partnership aims to address a projected shortage of more than 57,000 registered nurses in Texas by 2036 by expanding clinical placements and preparing more graduates for in-demand roles.

Texas State University received 378 bachelor of science in nursing applicants for fall 2025 — the most in program history. About 128 students are expected to graduate in May 2026, which will mark the school’s largest class to date.

“By combining Texas State’s renowned nursing curriculum with our first-hand training opportunities, we are preparing the next generation of nurses to meet the evolving needs of our community with skill, compassion and resilience,” Robert Honeycutt, president of Christus Santa Rosa Hospital-San Marcos, said in the news release.
