Survey: Wellness Programs Help Slow Hospital Employee Medical Cost Growth

For hospitals in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware, the cost of total medical and prescription drug plans showed a median increase of 5.6 percent — a much smaller increase than five years ago, according to Cammack LaRhette Consulting's medical and prescription benefits survey.

According to the survey, which includes responses from 50 hospitals in the five states, slower cost increases can be attributed in part to continued implementation of employee wellness programs. Of the 50 surveyed hospitals, 76 percent offered wellness programs and 3 percent planned to offer them in the next 12 months.

"Hospitals continue to successfully implement innovative programs for their employee populations, giving them valuable insight into strategies for improving the overall health of the diverse communities in which they operate," Frank Lonardo, practice leader at Cammack LaRhette Consulting, said in a news release.
