The review also said that faculty members believe Department Chair Laurie Fajardo is behind many of the problems the department is facing. The report is the culmination of six months of study by a review committee that was convened by the College of Medicine and included physicians from the University of Minnesota and Ohio State in addition to Iowa.

Although the report cited major flaws in the department, it praised its nationally recognized faculty, training program for medical residents and cancer research.
